African-born Australians are a recognised “priority population” in Australia''s Sixth National HIV/AIDS Strategy. We compared exposure location and route for African-born people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Victoria, Australia, with HIV-1 pol subtype from drug resistance assays and geographical origin suggested by phylogenetic analysis of env gene. Twenty adult HIV positive African-born Victorian residents were recruited via treating doctors. HIV exposure details were obtained from interviews and case notes. Viral RNA was extracted from participant stored plasma or whole blood. The env V3 region was sequenced and compared to globally representative reference HIV-1 sequences in the Los Alamos National Library HIV Database. Twelve participants reported exposure via heterosexual sex and two via iatrogenic blood exposures; four were men having sex with men (MSM); two were exposed via unknown routes. Eight participants reported exposure in their countries of birth, seven in Australia, three in other countries and two in unknown locations. Genotype results (pol) were available for ten participants. HIV env amplification was successful in eighteen cases. HIV-1 subtype was identified in all participants: eight both pol and env; ten env alone and two pol alone. Twelve were subtype C, four subtype B, three subtype A and one subtype CRF02_AG. Reported exposure location was consistent with the phylogenetic clustering of env sequences. African Australians are members of multiple transnational social and sexual networks influencing their exposure to HIV. Phylogenetic analysis may complement traditional surveillance to discern patterns of HIV exposure, providing focus for HIV prevention programs in mobile populations.  相似文献

Changes in the cover and density of shrubs and trees were assessed from aerial photographs (1940, 1974 and 1998) as well as from fixed-point photographs taken in 1984 and 1996 in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Woody cover (trees and shrubs combined) increased by 12% on granite substrates but decreased by 64% on basalt substrates over the past 58 years. Both these figures are expressed in terms of the initial values, respectively. The density of the large tree component of woody vegetation decreased on both substrates. Woody vegetation cover declined as fire return periods became shorter, but the relationship was weak. The increases in woody plant density and cover on granite are thought to be the result of decreased competition from grasses, which in turn is a result of overgrazing by wild herbivores whose numbers have been kept high through the provision of surface water. These effects were not seen on the relatively nutrient-rich basalts, where grasses can recover rapidly even after heavy grazing. The decline in overall woody cover on basalts is interpreted as a result of regular, short-interval prescribed burning over the past 40 years, while the universal decline in large trees seems to result from an interaction between regular, frequent fires and utilization by elephants. The implications for management are discussed.  相似文献

Responses to bilateral vagal nerve stimulation, to field stimulation, and to exogenous methacholine and histamine were compared in tracheas isolated from (a) saline injected (i.p.) and saline-aerosol exposed guinea pigs (control), (b) ovalbumin-sensitized and saline-aerosol exposed (sensitized) guinea pigs, and (c) ovalbumin-sensitized and 2% ovalbumin-aerosol exposed (challenged) guinea pigs. Tracheal pressor responses (cmH2O; 1 cmH2O = 98.1 Pa) to nerve and field stimulation, and maximal responses to methacholine and histamine were significantly increased in animals from group c compared with groups a and b. Dose-response lines in response to the two agonists, expressed as percent maximal contraction, did not differ among the groups. The M1 antagonist pirenzepine (0.1-10 nM) selectively reduced responses to nerve stimulation in all three groups. The M2 antagonist gallamine potentiated responses to nerve or field stimulation in all three groups. We conclude that M1, M2, and M3 muscarinic receptor functioning is similar in control and ovalbumin-sensitized guinea pigs. Changes in post-receptor transduction mechanisms may mediate the increased responsiveness noted in animals from group c.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown major differences in the way biomass of stream periphyton is controlled by spatial variations in velocity. We hypothesize that these differences may be the result of different growth forms within the community. Some dense and coherent growth forms (e.g. mucilaginous diatom/cyanobacterial mats) may be resistant to diffusion and also resistant to dislodgment by shear stress. Higher velocities applied to such communities could therefore be expected to enhance biomass accrual by increasing rates of mass transfer, but without greatly increasing losses through sloughing. Conversely, other growth forms (e.g. long filamentous green algae) have an open matrix, and high rates of diffusion into the mats can potentially occur even at low velocity. However, as velocities increase, high skin friction and form drag should lead to higher rates of sloughing. The overall result of these processes should be that maximum biomass occurs at low velocities. This “subsidy-stress” hypothesis was tested twice with each of three different periphytal growth forms: a coherent, mucilaginous, diatom community; a moderately coherent, stalked/ short, filamentous diatom community; and an open-weave, long, filamentous green algal community. A monotonic increase in chl a biomass occurred as a function of near-bed velocities for the first of the two mucilaginous diatom communities investigated. No biomass-velocity relationship was found, however, with the second mucilaginous community, probably because the waters were highly enriched and mass transfer driven by molecular diffusion was probably high throughout the velocity gradient. Biomass was moderate at low velocities, peaked at near-bed velocities from 0.18 to 0.2 m·s?1 (~0.40–0.45 m·s?1 mean column velocity), and then decreased at higher velocities in both of the stalked/ short filament communities of diatoms analyzed. With the long filamentous green algal communities, a monotonic reduction in biomass occurred as a function of increases in velocity. Proliferations greater than 100 mg·m?2 chl a occurred at low near-bed velocities (i.e. <0.2 m·s?1), after which biomass declined nearly exponentially as a function of increasing velocity to less than 10 mg·m?2 chl a at velocities greater than 0.4 m·s?1. These biomass-velocity trends support our hypothesis that community growth form determines periphytal responses to spatial variations in velocity within stream reaches.  相似文献
